6061 vs 7075 Aluminum for Machined Parts

A buyer-oriented comparison of machinability, strength, finishing and typical application trade-offs.

7 min read · Buyer resource

Where 6061 fits

6061 is widely available, machines predictably and supports common anodized finishes. It is often suitable for housings, brackets, fixtures and industrial components where balanced performance and cost matter.

Where 7075 fits

7075 offers higher strength but can cost more and requires closer review of corrosion protection, geometry and material condition. It is commonly considered for highly loaded lightweight parts.

Choose against the application

Strength alone should not decide the alloy. Review environment, fatigue, joining, cosmetic expectations, certification and regional material availability before releasing the drawing.
