How to Approve Wood Finishes for a Project

Create a repeatable approval standard for veneer, stain, sheen and batch variation.

5 min read · Buyer resource

Control the substrate

The same stain can look different across veneer species, cut, grain and base color. The approval sample should use the intended production substrate and construction method.

Review under relevant lighting

Warm hospitality lighting, daylight and retail lighting can change perceived color and sheen. Review samples in conditions that represent the finished space.

Define acceptable variation

Natural material will vary. Establish a signed control range, grain-matching expectations and rules for visible panels so production teams can make consistent decisions.
